SUMMARY:March 19\, 2026 Members Meeting and Demonstration by Jody Ziehm
DESCRIPTION: Our March Members Meeting this year will be different! It will be in person on March 19\, 2026 from 7 – 9 pm at the Amherst Community Church\, 77 Washington Hwy\, Snyder\, NY. ( Lots of parking behind the facility.) Snacks provided by our Hospitality Committee.\nAfter a brief Members Meeting highlighting the upcoming events for 2026\, we will be treated to a demonstration by an amazing artist\, our Signature Member and popular teacher Jody Ziehm \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJody is a beloved watercolor artist and teacher based in Niagara Falls New York. Jody creates drama in her paintings by turning up the “volume” with color. While preserving the white of the paper for lights\, creating mystery in her darks\, invites the viewer in. Expressive marks using unconventional tools such as sharpened sticks\, create a raw textural quality. Two important words in her process are “letting go”\, enforced with the use of a misting bottle. She is more interested in the emotion of her inspiration\, rather than replicating an image.\nAlthough she believes that there are paintings surrounding us in our everyday lives\, Jody’s most recent portfolio is inspired by hosting Artful Travels\, guided journeys across Europe and the United States. We come together to explore communities in their rich history weaving together art\, culture0 and shared discoveries.\nHost of “The Art of Watercolors by Jody Ziehm” a long running local cable community program. It can be seen online at WWW.LCTV.NET on demand.\nShe teaches 3 weekly classes at the Carnegie Art Center in North Tonawanda New York. She also teaches an annual fall workshop at the Chautauqua Institution Chautauqua\, New York. Conducts workshops in an around Western New York and Canada.\nMost recent award -National Watercolor Society 2025 members Exhibition awarded the Julian Ellsworth Garnsey Past Presidents award. SUMMARY:May 15th Members Meeting and Demonstration by Carl Purcell\, our May 2025 Workshop Artist
DESCRIPTION:After a brief in person Members Meeting\, we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by our May 2025 Workshop Artist Carl Purcell. This meeting and demonstration will be IN PERSON at the Amherst Community Church on Thursday\, May 15th from 7 to 9. \n      \nCarl Purcell taught painting and drawing at Snow College in Utah for 30 years. He is currently retired from the college but is a popular painting and drawing workshop instructor\, having conducted workshops throughout the West\, from Alaska to Arizona \, and in Great Britain. \nCarl is the author of the North Light publications\, Painting With Your Artist’s Brain (a watercolor book) and Drawing With Your Artist’s Brain. In addition his art has been featured in numerous articles published in The Artist’s Magazine and in Splash I. He has been invited to jury exhibits in Colorado\, New Mexico\, Wyoming\, Utah\, Nevada\, Michigan and Califonia. \nCarl has achieved signature member status in the National Watercolor Society and was given honor member status in the Utah Watercolor Society for his contributions to watercolor in the state. He has won numerous awards\, including a purchase award in the 2008 National Watercolor Society’s international exhibition. In 2009 Carl was chosen as one of the panel of three judges for the National Watercolor Society Annual Exhibition. \n“Stone Cadence” is one of a series of paintings I have been working on that explore the rhythmic patterns I see and feel in rock surfaces. I am drawn to the contrast of vertical fissures and cracks that cut through the horizontal layers of rock strata. To me these counter thrusts are like the unplanned events that cut through the well-laid plans of our lives. I see these rocks as living forms\, moving and dancing to the rhythm of life.” \nWhile his primary medium of choice is watercolor\, Carl also loves to work in oil and acrylic. Carl lives with his wife Nan in Manti\, a small town in central Utah. His paintings reflect his love of nature\, especially the rock canyon country of Utah.\n

DESCRIPTION:Announcing our September 2023 Season Opening in person demonstration by Rochester\, NY artist\, and NFWS Signature Member\, Kathy Armstrong! \nHer demonstration will follow a short NFWS Members Meeting where we will all be caught up to date on the events of the summer\, and hear about the year to come. \n   \n \nKathy Armstrong says that of all the media she paints in\, watercolor is her favorite because its transparent nature makes it possible to achieve a luminosity that isn’t possible with other mediums. In addition to her studio painting\nKathy enjoys plein air painting in oil\, and some of her largest paintings have been done in acrylic. Kathy teaches watercolor classes both in-person and virtually throughout the year. \nAfter a long career as a graphic designer in Wisconsin and Colorado\, Kathy returned to her native upstate New York in 2013\, moving to Rochester in late 2017. She is a Signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society\, Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and the Rochester Art Club and paints outdoors with the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters. Her work has been juried into international\, national and regional shows. Armstrong has been juried into the Memorial Art Gallery’s Rochester/Finger Lakes Exhibition three consecutive times\, winning the Alice E. Koret Award in 2019. She is one of the founding members of Pittsford Fine Art gallery at 4 Main Street in Pittsford\, NY. \n“When light touches the world it immediately brings it to life. SUMMARY:Members Meeting and Demonstration by Andy Evansen! Oh Boy!!
DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by immensely popular Minnesota watercolor artist Andy Evansen. \n This will be a Zoom event\, held at  4 pm  on Thursday\, March 16th. A Zoom link will be sent by email to all NFWS Members on the Monday before the Thursday evening Meeting.    \nAndy Evansen’s interest in art started in childhood\, and he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. Once he began painting\, he found himself attempting to capture the landscape with an economy of brushstroke evident in the work of the British watercolor artists he admired.  In addition\, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty\, subjects that many would simply pass by. \n“When I decided to begin painting 30 years ago\, there was never any question in my mind what medium I would choose.  Watercolor has always fascinated me; the effects of pigment and water mixing on the paper are so unique and challenging and the results so beautiful.  It is also the perfect medium for capturing those fleeting moments and light effects when working on location.” \nHe has been featured in many publications and is a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally.  He became a signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) in 2012 and served as their President from 2015-2017.  In 2022 he was selected as the only international member of England’s Pure Watercolour Society. \nHis paintings have won numerous awards\, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society in New York. \n“While learning\, I painted strictly from photographs and am glad I took that route.  Watercolor is challenging\, as it relies on timely washes that can be affected by the weather and a large amount of confidence due to its unforgiving nature.  I now paint ‘en plein air’ as well\, which has reinforced my efforts toward choosing strong\, simple subjects and working quickly to capture the essence of the scene.” \nHis love of painting on location also led to him being included in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event. \nYou can view his work at www.EvansenArtStudio.com.  \n

DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by Illinois watercolor artist Tom Francesconi. This will be a Zoom event\, held at  4 pm  on Thursday\, February 16th. A Zoom link will be sent by email to all NFWS Members on the Monday before the Thursday evening Meeting.  \n \n \n \nARTIST’S STATEMENT  \nMy paintings are a visual statement of my love for life. Yet\, it is not only the world around me with which I am put in touch\, but also the world inside of me. As an artist\, I have chosen to express myself through the language of paint. Stirred emotions are the essential beginnings of that language. It is my hope that my paintings will echo that emotional response and the viewer will share in my spirited statements.  \nTom Francesconi\, aws\, nws\, twsa (master)  \nTom Francesconi studied watercolor at the American Academy of Art in Chicago. His paintings have been exhibited in many national exhibitions\, which include the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society and the 2015 Shenzhen\, China International Biennial Exhibition. In 2020\, Tom’s painting was selected for inclusion in the NWS: 100 Years Exhibition. He has earned signature membership in numerous watercolor societies\, including the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, Watercolor West\, Rocky Mountain National Watermedia and the Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, of which he has been honored with ‘Master’ status. Tom has served as president of the Transparent Watercolor Society of America. Currently\, Tom is the executive director of the Illinois Watercolor Society.His work has been published in eight books on American Watercolor. Tom has written articles for Watercolor Artist\, Watercolor Magic and Watercolor magazines.  \nTom’s paintings have received many awards in regional and national exhibitions\, including the 1st Place Award at the 2011 Watercolor West Exhibition\, 3rd Place Awards at the 2019 Houston International Watermedia Exhibition and the 2019 Rocky Mountain National Watermedia Exhibition. Tom received an Honorable Mention Award for his painting\, “Unleashed”\, published in The Best of Watercolor: Winners From the 22nd Annual Splash Competition\, June 2021. Tom received the Gordon and Mildred Memorial Award at the 2023 Adirondacks National Exhibition of American Watercolors.  \nTom’s paintings are held in the corporate collections of Inland Real Estate Corporation\, Oakbrook\, IL\, CNA Insurance Company\, Chicago\, IL\, Paige Bus Enterprises\, Chicago\, IL and Morgan Stanley Financial Services Company\, Chicago\, IL and in many private collections throughout the United States. DESCRIPTION:After a brief Members’ Meeting NFWS will be treated to a demonstration by British Watercolor Artist Graham Berry \nGraham Berry Artist statement. \n“My paintings are inspired by the effect of light and shadow on our environment\, creating dynamic shapes and colours\, I especially enjoy painting people going about their everyday lives and I hope to inspire you to see future paintings everywhere you look. \nIn this demo I will show you how I simplify scenes\, to see things just as shapes and colours\, eliminate unnecessarydetail and take the fear out of painting people.Share with you my passion for watercolour painting and to pass on the knowledge and skills gained from over 40 years as a professional Illustrator and Artist. At the end of the  2 hour demo i will have a completed paintingthat will inspire you and give you confidence to put people in your own paintings. \nHappy painting.” \n  \nAbout me. \n   I studied Graphic Design at Blackpool College of Art\, and later studied Illustration at Wimbledon College of Art. After graduating in 1971 I was employed as the Illustrator at a small design studio in Soho\, London and has gone on to have a very successful illustration career.\n  I’ve had to move with the times and all my commercial illustration is now done digitally. It was this fact and the downturn in the economy  in 2010 that allowed me time to concentrate on watercolour painting. I’ve only recently began to consider myself a painter\, although I’ve drawn and painted most days for the past 40+ years it was as an illustrator\, any painting I did in my spare time was done to promote my illustration career. It as only been since my illustration work was now 100% digital that I could see myself as a fine artist. So I only consider I started my career as a painter 5 or 6 years ago. I finally retired from illustration in early 2017 and now concentrate fully on painting and teaching. I have recently had a studio built in my garden\, from where I will teach workshops to small group of students ( 4 max )\, there will be lots of one to one tuition.  \n  My paintings are inspired by the effect of light and shadow on our environment\, creating dynamic shapes and colours\, I especially enjoy painting people going about their everyday lives. My experience working as an Illustrator has refined my drawing ability that is the foundation to my work\, I believe the ability to draw is fundamental to my painting. I’m always on the look out for images that will make interesting paintings\, I try to take my camera with me at all times just in case I see something that appeals. At other times I will go to a specific place or event with the intention of getting material for painting\, usually I will do a number of paintings from those photos or sketches\, at the moment most of my paintings are studio based. \n  After years working as an illustrator\, with the restrictions of working to a brief\, it feels great to be painting for myself and when a painting is not going as I would like I now have the freedom to rip it up and start afresh. Somedays you feel you’ll never paint anything decent but you’ve just got to work through it\, every painting you produce adds to your knowledge of what works or doesn’t work. Painting with watercolour is never easy and every painting provides a fresh challenge\, it’s a very exciting medium to work with and when a painting turns out as you would like it’s very satisfying. \n  Over the last couple of years I have given demos and workshops to various Art Groups in the UK and in the summers of 2015 & 2016 I taught a 3 day workshops in the South of France for Rochemaure Aquarelle. \n In the spring of 2017 I together with my wife Pauline embarked on a watercolour workshop tour of the USA & Canada. I taught 9 workshops in 9 weeks\, three 2 day\, five 3 day and one 4 day\, a total of 25 days\, a lot of preparation! The workshop tour began in Illinois and then on to Texas\, South Carolina\, Arkansas\, Maryland\, Edmonton ( Canada )\, California and finally Panama City\, Florida. \n It was not all work and we did manage to visit some iconic destinations\, Dallas\, Memphis\, New York and San Francisco\, it really was a brilliant experience\, so much so that we are planning a return workshop tour in 2019! \n

DESCRIPTION:A Zoom Event\, Thursday\, November 17\, 2022\, 7 – 9 pm.\nAfter a brief Members Meeting we will welcome Gord Jones from Algonquin Highlands in Ontario\, Canada. (We will send a link to this Zoom event to all members on the Monday before the event.) Join us for an evening of inspiration.\nYou can see Gord’s demonstration\, as recorded\, on our Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society YouTube Channel!\n\n\n\n\nGord is a watercolour artist residing in the Algonquin Highlands where he has his studio\, White Pine Studio. He and his family moved from Stoney Creek after cottaging in Hali- burton for 25 years. \nGord is an elected member of the Canadian Society of Painters of Watercolour and the Society of Canadian Artists. He is also a member of the ECOAA\, IWS\, Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society\, Haliburton Arts Council\, and The Rail’s End Gallery in Haliburton. He has participated in the Studio Tour – Haliburton Highlands for the past 3 years. \nGord has been drawing and painting for over 35 years. After experiencing many different mediums such as oils\, acrylics\, even egg tempera\, he always returned to his greatest love – transparent watercolour. He is inspired by the surrounding landscape. The scenery in Haliburton has been a great source of inspiration for most of his paintings. His approach is to interpret the essence of his chosen subject rather than producing detailed likenesses of actual places. Watercolour allows Gord to transfer the light and shadow that he photo- graphs in real life to the painting. With a fluidity of colours\, Gord combines impressionistic strokes and semi-abstract techniques to elicit memories of place and time in his transpar- ent watercolour landscapes. He paints mainly landscapes\, cityscapes\, and industrial scenes. \nGord teaches watercolour painting in his studio and at The Haliburton School of Art & De- sign. DESCRIPTION:After a brief Members Meeting\, we will have our in person demonstration by local artist and beloved teacher\, Sheila Reigh.\n  \n\nSheila Reigh\, a WNY native residing in Tonawanda\, first joined NFWS in 2007\, and is a signature member and former NFWS Secretary.  She has BAs in Elem Ed and Psych\, graduating 1st in her class from Mercyhurst University in 1981.  After 12 years of formal school teaching in grades K-8 and H.S. English; and then part-time medical transcriptionist\, proofreader\, calligraphy teacher\, and summer camp art director; she made the switch to full-time self-employment as a professional face painter\, artist\, and art teacher. She currently teaches watercolor and drawing at the Tonawanda Senior Center\, accepts several commissioned projects in various art media each year\, and is a premiere face painter at many private and public events in WNY. \n\n\n“After studying artistic concepts such as composition\, perspective\, color theory\, and realism for several years at Partners in Art in North Tonawanda and elsewhere\, I wanted to try a more challenging and surprising medium. So I dove into watercolor!  Under mentors Gail Bille\, Jody Ziehm\, Margaret Martin\, Kathleen Giles\, and many others\, I have found joy in the fact that I can never duplicate the same result twice.  I love that watercolor can take ME for a ride!” \n\n\n“I love the surprising blends of colors\, the dramatic whites and darks\, creating color harmony and balance\, and even the challenges of ‘timing’ and ‘how-much-water-how-much-paint’.  In my ‘teacher brain’\, I am always striving to better  break down into steps and explain\, this wonderful world of watercolor to others.  I continually improve my curriculum so it works best for my students. DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome Canfield\, Ohio artist and popular workshop leader Chris Leeper\, a Member of the Board of Trustees of the Ohio Plein Air Society\, and past president of the Ohio Watercolor Society. \nChristopher Leeper is a realist painter working in all mediums. His award-winning work has been shown in solo and juried exhibitions throughout the country. He participates in a number of juried and invitational plein air events each year. He is a frequent award winner.                                                       \nHe has illustrated four children’s books and has written and illustrated the book Realism in Watermedia\, (North Light). His work has also been featured in The Artist’s Magazine\, Plein Air Magazine\, Watercolor Magic and Ohio Magazine and in the book Splash 14 (North Light).                                       \nA popular instructor\, he teaches numerous workshops each year as well as being a member of the adjunct faculty in the Department of Art at Youngstown State University. He graduated from Youngstown State University in 1988 with a BFA degree in graphic design. Since 2000\, he has painted full-time from his studio in Canfield\, Ohio. DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome our own Sandy Ludwig\, a Signature Member of NFWS\, Exhibiting Member of the Buffalo Society of Artists\, and longterm resident of Buffalo. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI have wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. My mom used to say that I only went to high school for the art classes and lunch periods; she was probably right about the art classes and artists have to eat. \nI have been fortunate to do what I love in my career. I had a great time teaching art and sharing my knowledge and excitement with my students.  I am retired now and get to do what I love on a regular basis. I work at making art almost everyday. My paintings and drawings are about experiences in my life\, at home and in my travels. As I travel I find wonderful places to explore.   \nI take mundane images and objects and find beauty in them. Sometimes\, I am inspired by the beauty of a place\, the personality of an individual or the uniqueness of a culture that is new to me. I try to capture the essence of my experiences in and of those places in my work. I am intrigued with the effect of light on shapes in nature and when I can\, I work plein air and when I can’t\, I use my drawings and photos to work in my studio. Quite often when I encounter an image or scene\, I know what medium I will use to execute the piece. My passion is to recreate the flavor of the experience. \nMy first love was watercolor.  I am fascinated when I watch the colors mix\, blend and pool\, creating edges and blossoms of color. I love the intense color of pastel\, the lusciousness and luster of oil\, and I love the sound and marks of drawing with pencil. \nI convey my joy of life through my work and I make art because it helps me breathe. \n                                                                                                         \nEveryone\, member\, not yet member and watercolor lover alike\, is welcome to join us. DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome our own NFWS Signature Member Carol Molnar\, an Elma NY artist whose paintings and other media creations have long fascinated all who know her.  \n \n \nArtist’s Statement: “Watercolor is just one of several ways I find to get the art stuff out.  I taught art for thirty one years (1st-12th grade) so I see myself as a “jack of all trades and a master of none”.  It wasn’t until several years after retiring and joining NFWS that watercolors were given some extra space next to: sewing\, gardening\, painted wood creations\, batik\, stained glass and jewelry design. \nI am not by any sense of the word a “disciplined” painter.  Weeks or even months will go by before picking up a brush.  The paintings are always worked on in my head long before being placed on paper.  Then the need to paint takes over and I will disappear into my workroom. \nA future painting presents itself at any given time.  I am so thankful for camera phones to preserve the memory of that perfect composition.  Sometimes … well actually pretty often\, I will view a scene and see it as if it was already a finished painting.  Objects from nature appear to be the work of assorted artists: a Burchfield tree\, a Georgia O’Keeffe sky\, a Picasso rock\, (I have one in my garden)\, a composition by Adolph Gottlieb\, and then the sun will quietly and perfectly cover a house for a painting by Edward Hopper.  I’m sure this happens because of all those years of teaching art history\, the principles of design and the elements of art.”  \nEveryone\, member\, not yet member and watercolor lover alike\, is welcome to join us. He is also an Artist Member of the Mid-Atlantic Plein Air Painters Association. \nMick’s Demonstration: During this watercolor demonstration Mick will focus on working with plenty of water and pigment to exploit the wonder and intrinsic beauty of the medium. DESCRIPTION:Twice a year\, in May and October NFWS partners with the Burchfield Penney Art Center to host a demonstration by the NFWS Workshop Artist. Our Spring Workshop Artist is internationally renowned water media artist\, Pat Dews. \nPat Dews\, a graduate of The Fashion Institute of Technology\, New York City is a signature member and Dolphin Fellow of the American Watercolor Society\, the National Watercolor Society\, National Collage Society and the New Jersey Water Color Society. \nDews creates experimental works in watermedia on paper and canvas.  She paints the abstract essence of nature.  The shapes and textures of flowers\, rocks\, water\, crumbled walls\, rusty objects are translated into richly layered paint surfaces. Collage is often integrated.  Dews skillfully juggles organic and geometric forms\, transparent and opaque paint – all held together by a basic abstract underlying shape.  It is this intricate dance\, rendered in strong color and value which produces her award-winning paintings. \n  \nCome to the BPAC early\, check our the exhibitions\, and the gallery shop. DESCRIPTION:NOTE: this meeting and demo is the 4th Thursday\, April 25th! \nAfter a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome Bill Mancuso\, sketcher\, watercolor painter\, Plein air enthusiast who joins us from Ohio. Here is his “Bio of Sorts”. \nBill shares: I have drawn for as long as I can remember and since 1998 I’ve shared that interest with students at Ohio Northern University in the flatlands of Ada\, OH where I live and work with my wife Melissa\, an accomplished artist who also teaches at Northern\, our two amazing daughters and a small herd of cats.  Before ONU I taught at Thiel College in Greenville\, PA for nine years after a year of shuffling between several schools in WNY teaching as an adjunct professor. \nI first came to painting as a kid with a local artist\, Rose DiCarlo\, who taught out of her home and who had us out on the street drawing and painting whenever she could.  Later I was extremely fortunate to be taken under wing by Don Grieger and John Hodgins who loved to paint outdoors and this was my real introduction to not just the process\, but also thinking about the purpose of the work.    \nMy “official” training came afterwards and consists of an undergraduate degree from SUNY College of Brockport where I was fortunate enough to study painting and drawing with Robert Marx and ceramics with Bill Stewart. My graduate degree is in drawing and painting from the University of Buffalo where the wonderful Harvey Breverman taught. I have also had the opportunity to participate in workshops with Charles Movalli\, Andy Evansen\, Bill Vrscak\, Vladislav Yeliseyev\, Eric Michaels and Yuki Hall amongst others. \nFor myself\, drawing and painting is about seeing interconnectedness. By attempting to see\, by participating in the process of seeing\, I try to be conscious and pay attention. Drawing and painting\, for me\, is a way to create a trail of my attention to the moment\, of being here now. When I consider what Gandhi said when asked about his message\, “my life is my message”\, perhaps the trail one leaves in art and life is not only our message\, but the ultimate form of art? \nEveryone is welcome to join us. We are a group that shares enthusiasm for watercolor and watermedia\, shares friendship and good snacks!!!

DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome Nancy Lane\, fine artist since 2007\, who works in watercolor and other watermedia. She creates her paintings and illustrations in her studio in the Finger Lakes Region of Central New York\, and is a member of the Rochester Art Club and the Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters.  \n“I spent 30 years as an illustrator of more than 24 picture books\, as well as book covers and magazine stories. Now I focus my time on my own paintings and commissioned work. \nI also enjoy teaching art to individuals and groups\, in my home as well as at Pat Rini Rohrer Gallery in Canandaigua\, NY. I’ve learned how to explain the intuitive process of creating art so that my students can grow as artists. \nWhen not in the studio\, I’m an avid reader. I play piano and love hearing live music. I have two grown children that I’m overly proud of.  I enjoy hiking with my husband and our rescued dog in the woods surrounding our log home in  New York’s Finger Lakes region.”  \nEveryone is welcome to join us for an entertaining evening of friendship\, learning and inspiration.  See you in March!   \n\n  \n\n

DESCRIPTION:A respected watercolor painter\, NFWS Signature Member Mary Hardegen will be our demonstrator in February. \n \nMary shares the following:\n“Exposed to watercolor at a young age\, I knew that my artistic abilities would ultimately be devoted to it. Watercolor itself offers a lifetime of experimentation to learn its elusive qualities. Intrigued more by what the paint itself displays than the actual subjects I choose\, I am inspired by anything that captures light and color\, especially landscapes. An expressive medium with unique results every time makes it an exciting medium to share with others through hands on experience\, which is why I also enjoy teaching others about watercolor. \nMy work has been exhibited locally and nationally\, receiving awards and being purchased for personal collections. \nI have been a member of NFWS for over 12 years\, serving as President and in several other roles. I also participate in the Southtowns Watercolor Salon. Centennial Art Center\, and Western New York Artists Group. \nI have taught classes in a variety of settings. DESCRIPTION:For our January 17th Members Meeting we welcome NFWS Signature Member Vicki O’Reilly whose mastery of luminous florals and keen observation of nature and our surroundings delight lovers of watercolor across the Niagara Frontier. \nVicki has shared the following: \n“I have admired watercolor paintings my whole life\, but until 15 years ago\, I had never worked in watercolor. In 1997\, I received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in studio art and art history from U.B.\, taking classes part time while I raised my two children. I also studied locally with a studio artist in portraiture and life drawing in oils\, pastels and charcoals. I was first introduced to transparent watercolor when I met Denise Sperry at a figure drawing class and was intrigued by the medium in which she worked. Denise told me that she gave classes in technique\, and I immediately signed up. From then on\, I have never looked back.\nI draw inspiration for my paintings from observation of my everyday environment as well as experience gained in my travels. People are often the subjects of my paintings and at other times I find a landscape or cityscape of a place intriguing. Flowers\, however\, are a special subject for me and often I find myself drawn to them\, wherever I may be. I believe that we all sometimes take the beauty around us for granted and I try to paint in a way that makes people take notice. My goal when I paint is to relate my poetic response to my subject. I will frequently zoom in and exaggerate the color or value to intensify the drama\, create a sense of mystery and communicate my excitement. Each painting holds a challenge for me both technically and spiritually\, as I work to depict visually what I feel emotionally.\nI am a signature member of NFWS and have been honored to receive awards for pieces exhibited in their juried shows. I served on the Board of Directors for 3 years and continue to be active in the society. I am also a longtime member of the Williamsville Art Society where I served as past President and chairperson of several committees. I continue to exhibit in their shows as well and have been honored with several awards. In October 2016\, I was accepted as an exhibiting member of the Buffalo Society of Artists. I live in Buffalo\, New York and have continued my art education by attending numerous workshops both locally and internationally.” \n   \nEveryone is welcome to join us for an entertaining evening of friendship\, learning and inspiration.  See you in January!

There is always a demonstration by remarkable water media artist\, and snacks are provided! \nSeptember’s artist demonstrator is Barbara Fox. What a treat! \nBarbara Fox is a painter recognized for still life and floral subjects in watercolor and oil. Her meticulously crafted paintings are exhibited and collected internationally\, have received numerous awards\, and have been selected for publication in fine art books and magazines. Barbara’s work has been published in four editions of the watercolor publication Splash: the Best of Watercolor Painting. She has been a featured artist in the leading national art magazines American Artist and Watercolor Magic. She leads watercolor workshops around the country\, teaching her method of layering washes and painting details. She is a signature member of the National Watercolor Society and the International Guild of Realism\, among others. \nBarbara’s Artist Statement: \nMy working method pays homage to the Dutch masters and the tradition of academic painting. I work from life and photographs. Watercolor and oil paintings begin as detailed drawings to which a number of glazes are applied\, building deep values and rich colors. The process of completing these works may take many weeks\, so I usually have several paintings in process at once. Creating artwork is both a meditation and an adventure that opens my eyes to our beautiful world.
