SUMMARY:November 21st Member Meeting and Demonstration by Watercolor Artist Carrie Waller.
DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members’ Meeting we will be treated to a watercolor demonstration by Carrie Waller who currently works from her Arkansas studio after returning from Tokyo\, Japan where she resided for the last 8 years. \n      \nCarrie Waller is a watercolor artist working in a realistic\, detailed style.  Her studies in Interior Design and Graphic Design as well as her time spent living in Europe and Asia have influenced her as an artist.   Her unique works are bold\, vibrant\, and dramatic.working in a realistic\, detailed style. Her training in Interior Design and her studies in Graphic design as well as her time living in Europe and Asia have influenced her as an artist. Her unique works are bold\, vibrant and dramatic. \nCarrie is a signature member of the American Watercolor Society\, National Watercolor Society\, San Diego Watercolor Society\, Louisiana Watercolor Society\, Mid-Southern Watercolorists and the Watercolor USA Honor Society. She teaches workshops and private classes. \nCarrie has won numerous awards and has had works published in many publications including Watercolor Artist Magazine\, The Art of Watercolour\, Pratique des Arts\, Southwest Artist’s Magazine\, International Artist Magazine\, Artist’s and Illustrators (runner up for Artist of the year)\, and The Artist’s Magazine. Most recently Carrie’s painting “Denkyu” won Best of Show in the 2023 Women in Watercolor International Competition\, her painting “Abundance” was awarded the Grand Prize in the American Women Artists\, Making Their Mark exhibition. Her painting “Banned” received the Dana Bartlett top award in the NWS member exhibition. “Celebration” and “Denkyu have received the Gold Medal award in the Mid-Southern Watercolorists Annual Juried Exhibitions. Her work has also been published in Splash\, The Best of Watercolor editions 16 – 23. \nArtist’s Statement\nI have always had a fascination with watercolor. The difficulty of the medium challenges me and the transparent layering cannot be replicated with any other medium. I challenge myself to push the medium by creating saturated colors and let the white of the paper sparkle through to create my dramatic lights. I love the process of being a still life painter. Conceptualizing the perfect painting in my head\, the hunt for the props\, setting up my finds in  a dramatic composition utilizing natural lighting and seeing my idea come to life. My intention is for the viewer to be captivated by the beauty and light of the piece and for it to give them an amazing visual experience. My goal is to make the ordinary\, extraordinary. \n

SUMMARY:NFWS 2024 Fall Workshop with Brienne Brown
DESCRIPTION:“Creating Dynamic Watercolors: Bringing the Everyday to Life”\nDates:            Wednesday October 23 to Saturday October 26\, 2024 \nLocation:      Taylor Theater Meeting Room at The Kenan Center in Lockport\, NY       (behind Kenan House – accessible ramp)\, 433 Locust St.\, Lockport\, NY 14094 \nTime:             9:30 am – 4:00 pm \nFee:               Members: $460          Non-Members: $500 \n\nTo for more information on the workshop and to register\, view and print the attached Registration Brochure: \nBrienne Brown Brochure \nAbout the Artist: \nMuch to her mother’s indignation\, Brienne owned little clothing that was not covered in paint.  From a young age\, Brienne showed talent in art and music\, but wanted to pursue a career in the sciences.  She started her education at the University of Utah as a double major (Art and Chemistry)\, eventually receiving a BS in Chemistry and finishing with a Master’s degree in 2004.  After graduation\, Brienne worked in a Toxicology lab.  Though she painted some by taking an occasional class\, as the years wore on\, she realized she wanted more art in her life than a career in science would allow.  She was surprised and delighted to find great fulfillment in painting.  In fact\, it became a necessity. \nAfter leaving her job as a toxicologist to raise her first child in 2008\, Brienne had the opportunity to paint more consistently.  Prioritizing painting and taking workshops from artists she admired paid off.  Soon she was not only exhibiting and entering shows regularly\, but also winning awards.  Brienne holds signature membership status for the National Watercolor Society\, American Impressionist Society\, and several other watercolor societies.  Every year\, she participates in several national juried and invitational plein air events\, teaches workshops all over the country\, and holds online courses.  She has won several top awards in many plein air and watercolor competitions across the country.  Her work has been published in Splash 17 Best of Watercolor:  Inspired Subjects\, PleinAir Magazine\, Southwest Art Magazine\, and Watercolor Artist Magazine. \nSee Brienne’s website: www.briennembrown.com for more information and images. \nCoordinators: Betty Stanton (stanton.elizabeth9@gmail.com) \n                           Jeanne Gugino (jeannegugino@icloud.com) \n

SUMMARY:Members in person Meeting and Demonstration by Judith Haynes Levins
DESCRIPTION:After a brief Members Meeting catching us up on the Fall’s Events\, Exhibition\, etc.\, we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by popular Cazenovia NY artist and instructor Judith Hayes Levins\, \n   \nArtist Statement: \nJudy knew from the beginning that art was her passion and her place in the world. “I see beauty in our world and try to convey that with brush\, paint and paper. My medium is watercolor and I express with it in an energetic\, bold manner. Art is a form of communication and by painting my world and having others feel something when viewing it\, we have shared a moment together and that is a wonderful thing.” \nArtist Bio: \nJudith’s art education began at home with her mother’s love of art instilled and nurtured in her children. Judy continued her passion at Boston’s New England School of Art & Design\, where she majored in Fashion Illustration. After graduation she taught figure drawing and textile rendering with The School of Fashion Design while she pursued her freelance art career. \nLife has taken her up and down the East coast\, currently putting down roots in Cazenovia NY\, a charming lake community tucked into the pastoral landscape of Central New York. She is a member of CazArts and has volunteered as President of the Cazenovia Watercolor Society (CWS) for three years\, as Secretary for two and serves as social media/website Chairperson. She keeps her brushes busy by joining the Adirondack Plein Air group\, Mountain Air Painters\, on weekly painting adventures as well as participating in numerous plein air groups. \nJudith teaches her love of watercolor in her private studio at the historic Atwell Mill in Cazenovia NY. She holds workshops with CazArts\, and travels to watercolor societies & art groups for demonstrations/workshops. Students have described Judy’s love of the medium as “contagious”. She says she wants her teaching to plant little watercolor seeds\, then sit back and watch her students bloom. \nJudy is an award winning artist that has gained Signature Gold status with the Central New York Watercolor Society (CNYWS)\, as well as filling a chair on their 2017 -24 Board of Directors. She sells her work from her Gallery/Studio and exhibits with the numerous groups she participates in throughout Central New York. \nYou can follow her painting adventures on social media Facebook and instagram. \nFor more information contact Judy\, jhlevins@icloud.com or here on her website jhlevins.com \n

SUMMARY:April 18th Members Meeting and Demonstration by Shelley Prior!
DESCRIPTION: \nAfter a brief Members Meeting catching us up on the Spring’s Events\, Exhibition\, etc.\, we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by Burlington\, Ontario artist and art instructor Shelley Prior!\n \n \n \nShelley is a full-time artist and art instructor. She has written that her watercolour painting style has evolved into a highly realistic style covering a variety of subjects which may include birds & wildlife\, nature\, portraits\, floral\, still life & landscape. Subjects with reflective qualities like glass and metal are especially intriguing to me. “I’m a very active instructor teaching regular classes as well as travelling to teach workshops throughout Ontario\, Canada and occasionally in the US which I’ve done for about 30 years. Although I paint in acrylic and oil as well\, my main medium is watercolour.”\nArtist Statement:\nI love the transparency and luminosity of watercolour. It’s something that is unique to only watercolour. Every subject presents new challenges and pushes me to try new techniques and different methods. Many years of experimentation (and yes\, lots of failures) have taught me to use quality materials and plan ahead in my painting\, as watercolours are less forgiving than other mediums. Every success is a real triumph though and I love to share what I’ve learned with other painters.\nLight is a crucial element in almost everything I paint. For me\, it’s the life of the painting. I always strive to have interesting lighting in my work and try to create it through the application of subtle glazes and deep rich shadows.\n\n\n

SUMMARY:March 21st Members Meeting and Demonstration on Zoom by Alexis Lavine.
DESCRIPTION: \nFollowing a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by award winning North Carolina artist and teacher Alexis Lavine. /We will email links to this zoom event to all members on the Monday before March 21st. \n \n \n \nHere is Alex’s statement about her work:\nMaking art is an essential and defining part of who I am and how I live. I see so much that intrigues me\, and I am endlessly challenged to paint what I see and how I feel.\nMy watercolor paintings appear to be realistic … but they are thoughtfully conceived\, strategically designed\, and carefully drawn around abstract shapes\, values\, colors\, movement\, and positive and negative spaces. I believe that my approach gives my work a more contemporary feel\, and results in paintings which convey my personal reaction to my subject\, not merely the visual facts.\nI was a passionate “plein air” painter for many years. Recently\, I have been working more in my studio\, where I can slow down my brush and take more time to design and craft my paintings with the utmost of care\, to create the most impact in my work and communicate with my viewers as effectively as possible. I have discovered a new fascination with the clothed human figure\, and have been focusing on telling stories\, through the use of grouping\, cropping\, and placement of the figures within my picture plane.\nEducation is tremendously important. I earned two bachelor’s degrees and a master’s degree\, before embarking on my path as a painter. I continue to study art whenever possible\, and I also teach painting and drawing classes and workshops. I love to speak about art\, share my experience and knowledge\, and help my students achieve greater success.\nI am a signature member of the National Watercolor Society\, Watercolor Honor Society\, Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, Watercolor West\, North East Watercolor Society\, and Southern Watercolor Society. Recently honored as “One to Watch” by Watercolor Artist Magazine\, my paintings have been published in Splash\, The Artistic Touch\, The Best of Watercolor\, Watercolor Artist\, and The New Palette. Creative Art Press has published a five-DVD instructional series\, called “Creative Watercolor Painting Using Photos” featuring my watercolor demos. My work can be found in galleries in the mid-Atlantic and Southern states\, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can see many of my paintings and learn more about my art and my teaching by visiting my web site.\nTo contact Alexis directly: alexislavineartist@gmail.com 336.684.2578 (cell) www.alexislavineartist.com www.facebook.com/alexislavineartist\n\nSee less

SUMMARY:February 15\, 2024 Members Meeting and Demonstration by Michael Holter\, all on Zoom!
DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by the popular watercolor artist and teacher Michael Holter\, from Plano\, Texas!\nThis will be a Zoom event\, held at 4 pm on Thursday\, February 15th. A Zoom link will be sent by email to all NFWS Members on the Monday before the Thursday afternoon Meeting.\nMICHAEL HOLTER\nhttps://www.michaelholter.com/\nMichael Holter is known for his dynamic watercolor portraits\, landscapes\, and workshops. After a successful career inart education\, advertisingdesign and creative leadership\, Michael began focusing more seriously on his painting in 2011. Michael is a signature member of numerous national watercolor societies. His work is widely published and he has received numerous national and international awards. He has released four DVDs from Creative Catalyst Productions: 7 Steps to Landscape Painting in Watercolor\, 7 Steps to Portraits in Watercolor\, Watercolor Landscapes from Photos and Paint the Town. Although Michael has been painting most of his life\, his work experience spans a wide range of creativity\, from high school art teacher\, advertising creative director and businessman. He holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Art Education and an MA in Visual Communication. \nMichael says\, “My work is impressionistic. I like to represent people or places and allow the painting to evolve from the recognizable. The challenge is to balance the care needed to make the representation interesting… and perhaps believable\, with the freedom\, looseness and painterly quality that makes a painting so expressive.” \n \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:January 18\, 2024 Members Meeting and Demonstration by Rick Surowicz\, all on Zoom!
DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by the popular watercolor artist and teacher Rick Surowicz\, from Medina\, Ohio.\nThis will be a Zoom event\, held at 4 pm on Thursday\, January 18th. A Zoom link will be sent by email to all NFWS Members on the Monday before the Thursday afternoon Meeting.\n\nArtist Biography \nRick Surowicz\, a painter currently living in Medina\, Ohio\, discovered how much he enjoyed the challenges of transparent watercolor in 1992.  His paintings have been juried into exhibitions of the American Watercolor Society\, Transparent Watercolor Society of America\, Louisiana Watercolor Society\, Georgia Watercolor Society\, and Splash 21.  Watercolor Artist Magazine did an eight-page feature article on his work in their 2021 Summer edition.   His YouTube channel has over 65\,000 subscribers with over 4.8 million views.  Rick is a signature member of the Ohio Watercolor Society\, and a current Trustee.  He keeps busy with his online instruction. \nArtist Statement \nTo look where others don’t look\, to see what others don’t see\, to say without saying inspires and challenges me as an artist. I look through underbrush to see the river\, I see beyond the flower to behold the foliage\, and suggest the tree by painting the woods. I seek to portray that which is not obvious. It’s not my intent to replicate but to interpret through the elements and principles of design. I enjoy the beauty of transparent watercolor and continue to learn and evolve with every painting\, with every brushstroke. \nYouTube:  https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC_RHSK_GEIoVTF-QNKDRvgA \nFacebook:  https://www.facebook.com/rsurowiczart  \nWebsite:  https://rsurowiczart.com/ \n \n \n \n

There will be no preliminary planning or drawing. Process will dictate direction as students use watercolor and gouache to implement elements and principles of design. Painting will start with random marks\, then color is added using a mixture of watercolor and gouache to create a library of design elements. The instructor will offer regular comments and evaluate work in progress regarding relationships between design elements and principles. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational\, but the goal is work which is compositionally pleasing and aligned with each artist’s personal aesthetic. \nGeneral Plan: The instructor will demonstrate every day of the workshop\, usually first thing in the morning. The rest of the day will be spent with students as they work on that day’s assignment (based on the morning demonstration). On the first day of the workshop after introductions\, Stan will give an overview on the elements and principles of design\, then an explanation of intuitive painting as he sees it. On the last day of the workshop critique time will be allotted in the afternoon based on the number of students in the class. \nAbout the artist: \nArtist and workshop instructor\, Stan Kurth\, has drawn and painted most of his life. SUMMARY:September 2023 Demonstration by Kathy Armstrong!
DESCRIPTION:Announcing our September 2023 Season Opening in person demonstration by Rochester\, NY artist\, and NFWS Signature Member\, Kathy Armstrong! \nHer demonstration will follow a short NFWS Members Meeting where we will all be caught up to date on the events of the summer\, and hear about the year to come. \n   \n \nKathy Armstrong says that of all the media she paints in\, watercolor is her favorite because its transparent nature makes it possible to achieve a luminosity that isn’t possible with other mediums. In addition to her studio painting\nKathy enjoys plein air painting in oil\, and some of her largest paintings have been done in acrylic. Kathy teaches watercolor classes both in-person and virtually throughout the year. \nAfter a long career as a graphic designer in Wisconsin and Colorado\, Kathy returned to her native upstate New York in 2013\, moving to Rochester in late 2017. She is a Signature member of the Philadelphia Water Color Society\, Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and the Rochester Art Club and paints outdoors with the Greater Rochester Plein Air Painters. Her work has been juried into international\, national and regional shows. Armstrong has been juried into the Memorial Art Gallery’s Rochester/Finger Lakes Exhibition three consecutive times\, winning the Alice E. Koret Award in 2019. She is one of the founding members of Pittsford Fine Art gallery at 4 Main Street in Pittsford\, NY. \n“When light touches the world it immediately brings it to life. It shapes and illuminates everything in its path. Trying to capture that light is the driving force behind my love of painting\,” says Kathy. \nTo see her work or for class information please visit her website at kathyarmstrongfineart.com.

SUMMARY:April 20\, 2023 In Person Members Meeting and Demonstration. Central New York watermedia artist Judith K. Hand will be our demonstrating artist.
DESCRIPTION:After a brief Members Meeting\, we will have our first in person demonstration of 2023! Our visiting artist will be the watermedia artist Judith K. Hand from Central New York. We will meet in the community hall at Amherst Community Church\, 77 Washington Hwy\, Amherst\, NY. Plenty of parking in the rear of the facility; driveway on the left. Entrance in the back.\n               \nJudith’s degree is in Art Education\, and she has taught art in public and private schools in Ohio\, Pennsylvania\, Massachusetts and New York.  She has also taught workshops at Cazenovia College\, The Everson Museum\, The Schweinfurth Memorial Art Gallery and for numerous art guilds in the Syracuse area.\nWatercolor is her first love; although she devotes a large portion of her creative time to drawing and has made occasional forays into acrylics\, printmaking and collage. \nHer subject matter and style are eclectic ranging from representational to abstract and geometric.  More recently\, she has been enjoying the challenges of combining abstraction of natural forms with geometric shapes – especially in the series of paintings she entitles “Fractured Flora.”\nJudith agrees with the painter\, Delacroix\,  that “The first merit of a painting is to be a feast for the eye.” and that is what she hopes to achieve in her work.\nWe will be together again\, and what a treat to host Judith Hand!\nCome and enjoy!\n

SUMMARY:Members Meeting and Demonstration by Andy Evansen! Oh Boy!!
DESCRIPTION:Following a brief Members Meeting we will have the pleasure of a demonstration by immensely popular Minnesota watercolor artist Andy Evansen. \n This will be a Zoom event\, held at  4 pm  on Thursday\, March 16th. A Zoom link will be sent by email to all NFWS Members on the Monday before the Thursday evening Meeting.    \nAndy Evansen’s interest in art started in childhood\, and he can’t recall a time when he wasn’t drawing. Once he began painting\, he found himself attempting to capture the landscape with an economy of brushstroke evident in the work of the British watercolor artists he admired.  In addition\, he was impressed with the way those artists seemed to capture everyday scenes in such a way that revealed a hidden beauty\, subjects that many would simply pass by. \n“When I decided to begin painting 30 years ago\, there was never any question in my mind what medium I would choose.  Watercolor has always fascinated me; the effects of pigment and water mixing on the paper are so unique and challenging and the results so beautiful.  It is also the perfect medium for capturing those fleeting moments and light effects when working on location.” \nHe has been featured in many publications and is a sought-after workshop instructor who paints and teaches internationally.  He became a signature member of the prestigious Plein Air Painters of America (PAPA) in 2012 and served as their President from 2015-2017.  In 2022 he was selected as the only international member of England’s Pure Watercolour Society. \nHis paintings have won numerous awards\, including the Bronze and High Winds Medals from the American Watercolor Society in New York. \n“While learning\, I painted strictly from photographs and am glad I took that route.  Watercolor is challenging\, as it relies on timely washes that can be affected by the weather and a large amount of confidence due to its unforgiving nature.  I now paint ‘en plein air’ as well\, which has reinforced my efforts toward choosing strong\, simple subjects and working quickly to capture the essence of the scene.” \nHis love of painting on location also led to him being included in the 2017 Qingdao International Masters Watercolor Plein Air Event. \nYou can view his work at www.EvansenArtStudio.com.  \n
