SUMMARY:February Members Meeting and Demonstration by Deanna Weinholtz
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about what’s happening in the watercolor community in Western New York\, enjoy the company of fellow watercolor and watermedia enthusiasts\, and watch a demonstration by our own Deanna Weinholtz.\nDeanna is a watermedia artist from Western New York who is best known for her luminous landscapes and seascapes in watercolor and acrylics. Her creations have been displayed in numerous exhibitions and galleries and have won national and regional awards\nDeanna’s inspiration comes from travels throughout the United States and Canada. The Kawartha Lakes in Canada is one of her favorite subjects and is frequently featured in her paintings. She was fortunate to experience growing up at her family’s summer resort on a lake in the Kawarthas. Observing spectacular sunsets over the water and the Northern Lights occasionally dancing across the sky\, has inspired a number of her paintings. Transparent watercolor and fluid acrylics are the mediums she chooses to portray her subjects because of their luminescent qualities and ability to layer creating depth. Deanna uses large brushes\, rags and her fingers to create spontaneous\, intuitive paintings that are a beautiful mix of representational abstract. A graduate of State University College at Buffalo with a degree in design\, Deanna worked as a graphic designer for several years before leaving to raise a family. She pursued other artistic professions including designing and dressmaking of wedding gowns\, until her passion for painting pulled her back to become a full time professional fine artist. She shares her knowledge and love of painting through teaching and demos. Deanna is a signature member of Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society\, an exhibiting member of Buffalo Society of Artists\, Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and Buffalo Niagara Art Association. www.deannaweinholtz. com

SUMMARY:January Members Meeting and Demonstration by Dan Meyer
DESCRIPTION:What better welcome back after the holidays! Join us on January 18th\, the third Thursday of the month\, at the Amherst Community Church for a short Members Meeting and a Demonstration by popular teacher and inspiring Watercolor Artist Dan Meyer. Everyone is welcome. \nDan Meyer is a Buffalo born painter who enjoys the challenge of transparent watercolor’s spontaneity and luminescent quality. As a wildlife artist and illustrator\, Dan’s creations have won numerous awards and have been featured on posters\, consumer packaging and national magazine articles. He exhibits his work at wildlife art shows throughout the year including the prestigious Southeastern Wildlife Exposition in Charleston\, South Carolina and Easton Waterfowl Festival in Easton\, Maryland. Dan is a member and past president of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and honorary member of the Central New York Watercolor Society. www.woodswindnwater.com. \nWith over 40 years of art experience\, Dan Meyer has been interpreting his encounters with the avian wildlife of North America through the use of transparent watercolor. His attempt at capturing the essence of his subject is directly related to his emphasis on values and the luminecient quality of the medium.\nDan considers himself a purist when it comes to watercolors\, meaning he uses no white paint and tries to avoid opaque colors. The whites of his paintings are the results of painting values around an area leaving the bare paper to create the white. This method of watercolor is one of the challenges that inspires Dan to create new paintings with the same excitement and enthusiasm that he had with his very first painting.\nDan’s inspiration for a painting comes from observing his subject in its natural environment. He gathers information through sketches\, notes and photography. In his studio he uses those references to create several sketches of the subject in various positions as part of the design process which will produce an eye-catching and interesting as well as self satisfying painting.\nA graduate of the Art Institute of Pittsburgh\, Dan worked in the advertising and packaging fields before pursuing Wildlife Art full time. His images have been used on packaging\, posters\, textiles and in sportsman magazines. He exhibits at a number of wildlife art shows in the east and shares his artistic knowledge with students through classes and workshops. Dan is a charter member and past president of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society and honorary member of the Central New York Watercolor Society.

SUMMARY:November Members Meeting and Demonstration by Paul Allen Taylor
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about what’s happening in the watercolor community in Western New York\, enjoy the company of fellow watercolor and watermedia enthusiasts\, and watch a demonstration by the colorful impressionist painter from Rochester\, NY\, Paul Allen Taylor. \n \nBorn in Rochester\, NY\, Paul Allen Taylor is a self-taught watercolorist recognized for his fresh use of color and impressionistic style. As a respected teacher and workshop instructor\, Taylor has developed a following where students find him engaging\, highly skilled\, and entertaining. \nI have been working in watercolor for nearly thirty years. In the beginning I painted as a hobby after finishing college classes. With time my skills improved and my range of subjects grew. I soon realized that painting was not just something to do\, but something I needed to do. \nToday I am an artist fulfilling a personal drive\, teaching others what I have learned and  benefitting from the sales of my art. \nMy recent work has involved pre-drawing in ink with a match stick. Where some artists will draw over a watercolor in pen and ink\, the pre-ink method with a match stick creates a drawing with varied line as the basis for the painting. This drawing not only adds necessary detail and shape definition to the work but also makes the painting process easier. This will be the subject of my demonstration for NFWS. \n  \nTaylor teaches watercolor for the Rush Henrietta Schools Adult Education program and the Artstore at Southtown Plaza in Rochester. His work can be seen at the Artstop in Penfield\, NY\, the Lower Mill Gallery in Honeoye Falls\, NY\, Bay House Artisans\, Alexandria Bay\, NY\, and Mares Wares Pottery\, Morristown\, NY.

SUMMARY:March Meeting and Demonstration by Brenda Cretney
DESCRIPTION:Our demonstrating artist for the March NFWS Meeting is Brenda Cretney\, an award-winning Signature Member of NFWS from Brockport\, NY. She started doing watercolors when she retired from teaching and enrolled in classes with a local art teacher. She then went to classes at the Creative Workshop in Rochester\, and most recently took lessons from another award-winning Signature Member of NFWS\, Kathleen Giles at the Kenan Center. She has also taken many workshops and read MANY books and articles. \nBrenda shares her inspiration with us: \nFor twenty years I really enjoyed owning a horse and doing chores at a stable\, This love of horses and other animals has been the inspiration for many of my paintings. If I can catch something of the animal’s personality in the painting\, I feel I have succeeded in the painting. I use photographs to refer to when painting. So\, I have had to learn how to take pictures of animals that do not like to stand still. My camera and I can be found at farms\, carriage shows\, rodeos\, county fairs\, stables and dog parks. When the sun is shining brightly it’s time to try to get the next great picture. \nMy husband and I share a studio over our garage where we both paint. He paints the birds he carves out of wood and I paint my watercolors. There is nothing as thrilling as having a painting turn out the way you had envisioned it when you first started. \nEveryone is invited to attend our meeting and demonstration\, and to hear about our classes\, upcoming events\, shows and workshops. Come enjoy the camaraderie of enthusiastic fellow artists and art lovers. SUMMARY:February Meeting and Demonstration by E. Jane Stoddard
DESCRIPTION:Our February 2017 Demonstrator is WNY’s own E. Jane Stoddard\, a Signature Member of NFWS\, and a prize-winning transparent watercolor artist.  Jane has shared her artist’s statement with us: \n“I begin a painting by reviewing my own photographic references\, editing for composition and developing a value sketch. I choose a subject which is based on strong composition and shift in values. Every painting begins with a drawing done “free-hand” on vellum paper\, transferred to 400# cold press Arches paper. I layer and glaze\, working in sections to achieve rich and dark luminous passages with strictly transparent pigment. \nBeing an artist has always been my passion\, even when all I had to work with was a box of crayons and poster paper. I paint strictly to please myself and not to satisfy a judge or the public. Winning an award or selling a painting is the “icing” on the cake. I am most happy when I am involved in the creative process and always look forward with anticipation to my next painting. \nThe past few years of my life have been filled with great heartbreak and joy.  Throughout it all the one thing that remained constant was my painting.  As my journey continues the narrative of my work is changing but my use of detail to describe my story remains constant.” \nEveryone is invited to attend our meeting and demonstration\, and to hear about our classes\, upcoming events\, shows and workshops. Come enjoy the camaraderie of enthusiastic fellow artists and art lovers. For more information about NFWS check our our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/niagarafrontierwatercolorsociety.
