SUMMARY:September Members Meeting and Demonstration by Eileen Sudzina
DESCRIPTION:Come learn about what’s happening in the watercolor community in Western New York\, enjoy the company of fellow watercolor and watermedia enthusiasts\, and watch a demonstration by the exciting painter from Pittsburgh\, Eileen Sudzina. \nEileen offers: “When painting\, I lose myself for a while and am free to create and design a work that’s loose and spontaneous on YUPO. I try to capture just the essence of what’s inside myself\, painting quickly with a lot of flowing energy. I like there to be a lot going on close up\, but to have the wholeness of the work show that something’s there too.\nI design with pattern and my work has been described as a “Sense of Interval”. \nI am the Screening Chair and Workshop Coordinator for the Pittsburgh Watercolor Society and former Vice President.”

SUMMARY:March Meeting and Demonstration by Brenda Cretney
DESCRIPTION:Our demonstrating artist for the March NFWS Meeting is Brenda Cretney\, an award-winning Signature Member of NFWS from Brockport\, NY. She started doing watercolors when she retired from teaching and enrolled in classes with a local art teacher. She then went to classes at the Creative Workshop in Rochester\, and most recently took lessons from another award-winning Signature Member of NFWS\, Kathleen Giles at the Kenan Center. She has also taken many workshops and read MANY books and articles. \nBrenda shares her inspiration with us: \nFor twenty years I really enjoyed owning a horse and doing chores at a stable\, This love of horses and other animals has been the inspiration for many of my paintings. If I can catch something of the animal’s personality in the painting\, I feel I have succeeded in the painting. I use photographs to refer to when painting. So\, I have had to learn how to take pictures of animals that do not like to stand still. My camera and I can be found at farms\, carriage shows\, rodeos\, county fairs\, stables and dog parks. When the sun is shining brightly it’s time to try to get the next great picture. \nMy husband and I share a studio over our garage where we both paint. He paints the birds he carves out of wood and I paint my watercolors. There is nothing as thrilling as having a painting turn out the way you had envisioned it when you first started. \nEveryone is invited to attend our meeting and demonstration\, and to hear about our classes\, upcoming events\, shows and workshops. Come enjoy the camaraderie of enthusiastic fellow artists and art lovers. For more information about NFWS check our our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/niagarafrontierwatercolorsociety. \nBrenda Cretney’s stunning watercolor Walnut Hill.

SUMMARY:February Meeting and Demonstration by E. Jane Stoddard
DESCRIPTION:Our February 2017 Demonstrator is WNY’s own E. Jane Stoddard\, a Signature Member of NFWS\, and a prize-winning transparent watercolor artist.  Jane has shared her artist’s statement with us: \n“I begin a painting by reviewing my own photographic references\, editing for composition and developing a value sketch. I choose a subject which is based on strong composition and shift in values. Every painting begins with a drawing done “free-hand” on vellum paper\, transferred to 400# cold press Arches paper. I layer and glaze\, working in sections to achieve rich and dark luminous passages with strictly transparent pigment. \nBeing an artist has always been my passion\, even when all I had to work with was a box of crayons and poster paper. I paint strictly to please myself and not to satisfy a judge or the public. Winning an award or selling a painting is the “icing” on the cake. I am most happy when I am involved in the creative process and always look forward with anticipation to my next painting. \nThe past few years of my life have been filled with great heartbreak and joy.  Throughout it all the one thing that remained constant was my painting.  As my journey continues the narrative of my work is changing but my use of detail to describe my story remains constant.” \nEveryone is invited to attend our meeting and demonstration\, and to hear about our classes\, upcoming events\, shows and workshops. Come enjoy the camaraderie of enthusiastic fellow artists and art lovers. For more information about NFWS check our our Facebook page. https://www.facebook.com/niagarafrontierwatercolorsociety.

SUMMARY:October 2016 NFWS Members' Meeting and Thomas W. Schaller Demonstration
DESCRIPTION:NFWS welcomes our Fall 2016 Workshop Artist\, Tom Schaller to the Burchfield Penney Art Center auditorium for his much anticipated demonstration. Tom has shared with us:”All art has some story to tell. And in my work – far more than any specific object or space – it is the narrative of light that is always the focus. While I love to paint cityscapes and buildings\, I have found that it is the often abstract dialogue between – and the collision of – the natural and the man-made worlds that makes the most compelling subject matter for me. The fascinating ways in which buildings interact with the sky and the landscapes where they are placed form countless surprising and beautiful compositions of positive and negative shapes – rich darks and sparkling lights. \nAs an architect\, I was trained in the strict Beaux-Arts methods of watercolor application; but as a fine artist\, I have grown to love the integration of those formal techniques with the freedom of much looser\, less controlled\, and expressionistic methods. It is my goal to paint quickly\, drawing on emotion and sense memory – finishing a painting all in one go. When finished\, I like my watercolors to still look as if they are wet. In many ways\, I see watercolor as a natural extension of the intuitive act of drawing. But rather than using a line formed by pen or pencil\, in watercolor\, I draw using shapes – shapes of value – shapes of shadow and light.” \nVisitors are invited to hear about watercolor classes and upcoming events\, watch the demo\, and enjoy the BPAC galleries and gift shop with a group of enthusiastic fellow artists and art lovers.

SUMMARY:Thomas Schaller\, Fall Workshop
DESCRIPTION:This workshop will be held at Marienthal Country Inn\, 5107 Langford Rd.\, North Collins\, NY\,  14111. www.MarienthalCountryInn.com. \nAs of Wednesday\, August 3\, 2016\, the Thomas W. Schaller Workshop has sold out! thank you all for your interest. Save the third week in May for the Spring 2017 Workshop with Carol Carter! \nQuoting Thomas W. Schaller – “All art is a form of story-telling  and I believe that good art asks more questions than it answers.  And so it is often in this clash between the architecture of man and the architecture of nature \, where I gain most of  my artistic inspiration. It is where  the most compelling questions can be asked\,  and where the stories I wish my art to tell can most often be found.” \n \nHe has long been considered one of the foremost architectural artists in the world. In the field\, he has won every major award for his artwork – including being a two-time recipient of the Hugh Ferriss Memorial Prize. He has authored two books ; the best-selling\, and AIA award of merit winner\, Architecture in Watercolor\, and The Art of Architectural Drawing. He is increasingly in demand internationally to conduct his watercolor workshop series\, “The Architecture of Light” filmed in 2015 as a series of videos and DVDs by Artist Network TV : It is also the working title of his next book currently in progress.\nFor more information about Tom and this workshop:\nSCHALLER BIO\nSCHALLER ARTIST’S STATEMENT\nSCHALLER WORKSHOP OUTLINE\nSCHALLER WORKSHOP MATERIALS \nImage: Thomas W.
