SUMMARY:September Virtual Members Meeting and Demonstration by Michael Broshar
DESCRIPTION:After a brief Members Meeting\, and welcome back from summer vacation\, Michael Broshar will demonstrate his amazing watercolor technique.  A retired architect from Waterloo \, Iowa\, Michael has been a full-time watercolor artist and teacher since 2013.  \nArtist’s Statement – I have always been intrigued by watercolor as an art form\, and how it captures light unlike any other medium. For several years\, my focus was on digital art\, but in 2013\, I focused my painting using watercolor as a medium. \nMy subjects are based on the places I have visited in Iowa and throughout the United States and world.  My architectural background leads me towards painting architectural subjects\, but I find interesting subjects in the landscape around me. I frequently travel the countryside of the Midwest\, and find the rural landscapes\, small town and city structures\, and the industrial areas of the rivers to be compelling. \nMy intention is not to create a photo realistic image of a scene\, but to capture the feeling of the scene.

SUMMARY:A Special Thursday Night! June 17th! Andrew Pitt will demonstrate on Zoom for NFWS!
DESCRIPTION:As a special treat we will have British artist Andrew Pitt on Zoom for NFWS Members from London! We will email Zoom invitations on the Monday before the Event!\nAndrew Pitt was born in Maldon\, Essex in the UK. He started painting at the age of eleven\, inspired by watching visiting artist who came to Maldon to paint the Thames Sailing Barges. \nAlthough he is primarily a watercolour artist he also paints and teaches oil painting.  \nHe has been teaching workshops and residential courses for over 40 years and has held over 20 one-man exhibitions. He has contributed many articles to the English art magazine\, “The Leisure Painter’’ and his first book\, ‘’Seasons and Reflections: Notes on Painting in Watercolour” was published in 2019. In 2008 Town House Films Ltd produced an instructional DVD called\, ‘’Watercolour: Pure and Simple with Andrew Pitt’’. \nAndrew lives in Suffolk\, England with his wife Rachel and her small flock of chickens. \nHere is his Artist’s Statement\nPainting\, particularly in watercolour\, is endlessly fascinating because we are not painting what we know but what we have just found out. My aim is to paint a picture which represents the subject as I see it without compromising the fluid\, transparency of the watercolour medium. \nTo achieve a lively\, fresh painting is a high risk activity\, but when a watercolour is successful it is difficult to beat using any other medium. I try to keep my technique and materials as simple as possible. I paint using a direct – all a prima – method\, which dispenses with the traditional ‘’light to dark’’ approach. I go for the end straight away\, the way I want my picture to look when it is finished\, using the minimum of planned over-painting; a method which emphasises the freshness\, and essential beauty of watercolour. I also want the viewer to feel my paintings celebrate the subject and convey the enthusiasm and pleasure of the artist.

SUMMARY:May 2021 NFWS Members Meeting and Virtual Demonstration by Spring Workshop Artist Keiko Tanabe
DESCRIPTION:Our Spring Workshop Artist\, the exciting watercolor painter\, Keiko Tanabe\, will demonstrate for us on Zoom after a brief Members Meeting. \nKeiko Tanabe\, AWS\, NWS\, often works en plein air. Her atmospheric watercolors perfectly capture a sense of time and place. Keiko’s definitive color\, textures\, and signature brushwork beautifully convey both the exotic and simple scenes of the many places she travels. Keiko grew up in an art loving family in Kyoto\, Japan and won many art awards as a child. Although Keiko never attended art school\, in her heart she desired to be an artist. After taking only one drawing class to learn basic technical skills\, she fervently began painting in 2005. \nOne year later while attending a local community school in San Diego to learn basic drawing and watercolor painting skills\, Keiko decided to paint full-time. From then on\, she intensely taught herself to be fluent in watercolor painting\, just as one would do to master a foreign language. Her subjects include landscape\, cityscape\, waterscape and interior scenes\, which will be demonstrated in the workshop using representational and impressionistic compositions. Keiko has successfully completed more than 300 workshops and numerous live demonstrations around the world. Four DVDs and several books of her art have been featured in many art magazines. \n \nJoin us on Zoom! Invitations to the meeting will be sent to all NFWS Members by email on the Monday before the May 20th Event.

SUMMARY:March's Brief Meeting and Artist Demonstration by Lena Thynell
DESCRIPTION:March 18th’s Meeting and Demonstration will be a Zoom Event! Links to the Zoom event will be sent to all NFWS Members on Monday\, March 15th. The demonstration will be recorded and will also be posted for everyone to see on our Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society YouTube Channel. \nHere is a painting by our talented demonstrating artist\, Lena Thynell. \n \nLena shares: When I paint\, I aim to express a feeling or a mood of the object rather than to create an exact picture. Being outdoors\, painting is very inspiring and I love it. It’s a challenge to paint outdoors exposed to wind\, sun\, rain and even snow. My paintings come alive in a way that is quite different from those paintings created in my studio. What started as a hobby has been an important part of my life. \nImpressions from two continents. \nLena Thynell lives with her husband nearby State College\, PA. She got her education in watercolor painting at the Gerlesborg Art School in Sweden\, taking week long classes over several years. This school is located north of Gothenburg on the beautiful Swedish west coast.\nShe is an art instructor at the Art Alliance of Central Pennsylvania. After a long career as a Registered Nurse\, Certified Nurse Midwife and Department Head in Sweden\, watercolor has now become an important part of her life. She often paints “en plein – air” which gives her much joy and new inspiration. “It’s a challenge to paint on location and that’s what I like” Lena states.   \nLena has participated in Juried Art Shows as well as solo art shows in Sweden and Juried Art Shows in the United States. She has also participated in several Juried Plein Air Events. \nSince the move to the United States\, Lena has attended workshops with Skip Lawrence\, Alvaro Castagnet\, Andy Evansen\, Vladislav Yeliseyev and Mick McAndrews.\nLena is a Signature Member of the Pennsylvania\, Philadelphia\, Baltimore and Pittsburgh Watercolor Societies\,   a Member of the Nordic Watercolor Society NAS\, Social Media Administrator at Philadelphia Watercolor Society and was the Juried Artist representing Sweden at Fabriano In Acquarello 2019\, the Watercolor community of: NORDIC COUNTRIES. \nhttp://www.LenaThynellWatercolor.com \nWe look forward to seeing a large group of watercolor enthusiasts on Zoom!

It still doesn’t matter to me which direction I choose. I can be just as happy working with watercolors as I am painting with oil paints or working in clay or digging  in the gardens. I get up early in the morning & go right to work in the studio. I always start out with a sketch\, revise it\, do more idea sketches and think about the object from every angle before I begin making anything. This method has served me well.”     “If I am not making something\, I am miserable.”     Roger DeMuth   \n                             \n

SUMMARY:November 19th Zoom Demonstration by Art Cunanan
DESCRIPTION:Art Cunanan   demonstrated virtually in a NFWS Zoom Meeting on November 19th. We provided an invitation to the Zoom event by email to NFWS Members.   We recorded the demonstration and posted it on our Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society YouTube Channel.   You can check out the six demonstration videos on the channel now by clicking here. \nNiagara Frontier Watercolor Society YouTube Channel. \nArt Cunanan’s Bio \nBorn and educated in the Philippines\, Art immigrated to Canada in 1976. Excited at the prospect of pursuing his passion for painting\, he enrolled in workshops to gain knowledge of the business of Art in Canada. Today he lives in Southern Ontario with his wife where the surrounding abounds with beautiful subject matters. “If only we would stop and appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.” It has served him well as most of his paintings depict beautiful Ontario. \nFrom oil to watercolor and acrylics\, Art has proven that he can handle all three mediums very well. Being more at ease with watercolors\, Art conducts workshops all across Canada\, United States and Europe using the medium with expertise. \n“I love nature; it inspires me all the time. Light dominates my paintings\, it makes them alive. Being able to paint is a gift\, sharing this talent is God given.” \nHere are two images shared with us by Art. Beautiful! \n \n \n

SUMMARY:February Members Meeting and Demonstration by Sandy Ludwig
DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome our own Sandy Ludwig\, a Signature Member of NFWS\, Exhibiting Member of the Buffalo Society of Artists\, and longterm resident of Buffalo. \nARTIST STATEMENT \nI have wanted to be an artist for as long as I can remember. My mom used to say that I only went to high school for the art classes and lunch periods; she was probably right about the art classes and artists have to eat. \nI have been fortunate to do what I love in my career. I had a great time teaching art and sharing my knowledge and excitement with my students.  I am retired now and get to do what I love on a regular basis. I work at making art almost everyday. My paintings and drawings are about experiences in my life\, at home and in my travels. As I travel I find wonderful places to explore.   \nI take mundane images and objects and find beauty in them. Sometimes\, I am inspired by the beauty of a place\, the personality of an individual or the uniqueness of a culture that is new to me. I try to capture the essence of my experiences in and of those places in my work. I am intrigued with the effect of light on shapes in nature and when I can\, I work plein air and when I can’t\, I use my drawings and photos to work in my studio. Quite often when I encounter an image or scene\, I know what medium I will use to execute the piece. My passion is to recreate the flavor of the experience. \nMy first love was watercolor.  I am fascinated when I watch the colors mix\, blend and pool\, creating edges and blossoms of color. I love the intense color of pastel\, the lusciousness and luster of oil\, and I love the sound and marks of drawing with pencil. \nI convey my joy of life through my work and I make art because it helps me breathe. \n                                                                                                         \nEveryone\, member\, not yet member and watercolor lover alike\, is welcome to join us. We are a group that shares enthusiasm for watercolor and watermedia\, welcomes  friendship old and new\,  and  enjoys good snacks!!!

SUMMARY:January Members' Meeting and Demonstration by Carol Molnar
DESCRIPTION:After a short and informative members meeting\, we will welcome our own NFWS Signature Member Carol Molnar\, an Elma NY artist whose paintings and other media creations have long fascinated all who know her.  \n \n \nArtist’s Statement: “Watercolor is just one of several ways I find to get the art stuff out.  I taught art for thirty one years (1st-12th grade) so I see myself as a “jack of all trades and a master of none”.  It wasn’t until several years after retiring and joining NFWS that watercolors were given some extra space next to: sewing\, gardening\, painted wood creations\, batik\, stained glass and jewelry design. \nI am not by any sense of the word a “disciplined” painter.  Weeks or even months will go by before picking up a brush.  The paintings are always worked on in my head long before being placed on paper.  Then the need to paint takes over and I will disappear into my workroom. \nA future painting presents itself at any given time.  I am so thankful for camera phones to preserve the memory of that perfect composition.  Sometimes … well actually pretty often\, I will view a scene and see it as if it was already a finished painting.  Objects from nature appear to be the work of assorted artists: a Burchfield tree\, a Georgia O’Keeffe sky\, a Picasso rock\, (I have one in my garden)\, a composition by Adolph Gottlieb\, and then the sun will quietly and perfectly cover a house for a painting by Edward Hopper.  I’m sure this happens because of all those years of teaching art history\, the principles of design and the elements of art.”  \nEveryone\, member\, not yet member and watercolor lover alike\, is welcome to join us. We are a group that shares enthusiasm for watercolor and watermedia\, welcomes  friendship old and new\,  and  enjoys good snacks!!!
