Exhibition Juror and Awards Judge
Nicholas Simmons, a member of the North American Watercolor Artists (NAWA), will be representing the US in the 2nd Biennal Ibero-Americana de la Acuarela in Madrid, Spain, Sept. 14 – 28. He was the Gold Medal winner at the 2010 Texas Watercolor Society with Nassau #1: Discount Warehouse, a painting which was featured in “Best Watercolors of 2010” by Watercolor Artist magazine, Feb. 2011. He was a judge and exhibitor at the first Shanghai Zhujiajiao International Watercolor Bienal in 2010, the largest watercolor exhibition in the world. He will repeat as judge in 2012. Nick is sponsored by Da Vinci Paints, Princeton Brushes, and most recently by Escoda Artist Brushes. In the Winter 2009 edition of Watercolor Magazine, John Parks writes:
“Nicholas Simmons paints in watermedia on a scale that rivals oil painting. The subject matter is a dazzling mix of figures juxtaposed with printed lettering, graffiti, Japanese block prints, neon lights, reflections, and lavish corners of nature. The effect can be disorienting, as though a camera has taken a picture by accident, revealing an image that is both exciting and mysterious. The paint itself swirls, floods, drips, and spatters, driven on by the general excitement of the imagery and giving the work a sense that it was done in a rush in a matter of minutes.”
The Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society
Founded in 1980, the Society’s primary aim is to promote, teach and exhibit TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOR. It is one of a very few Watercolor Societies today dedicated entirely to the transparent medium. Eligibility and Specifications Entry is open to all members of the Niagara Frontier Watercolor Society. All entries must be original works completed within the last 2 years. Copies or work done in a supervised workshop or supervised class are not acceptable. Work must not have won an award or been shown in any previous NFWS Show. All submitted paintings must be TRANSPARENT WATERCOLOR only, on untreated paper (NO yupo or canvas) using Transparent Watercolor (pigment in gum Arabic binder, resoluble in water). Use of opaque white, acrylic, gouache, graphite, ink, pastel, color pencil, watercolor crayon, charcoal, conte, collage or surface construction will not be accepted. Beyond the use of pencil guidelines, all calligraphic lines shall be completed with transparent watercolor. Non-adherence to the media requirements established by the Society disqualifies the work for juror consideration, based on the final decision reached by the exhibition screening committee.
Framing Requirements
The paintings must be sturdily framed. All paintings must be covered with plexiglass or acrylic sheet. NO GLASS. (Exception: hand delivered paintings under 16”x20”) The size of any painting must not exceed 60” in any direction and must be ready to hang with wire or D-rings (no saw-tooth hangers). Diptychs, etc. should be in one frame. Improperly framed paintings will NOT be hung.
